日本語⇩My favorite side of Tokyo that feels nothing like a city — mossy hikes, small mountain cafes, and glowing red maple trees. Here are some of my favorite spots to visit during the autumn season:
📍Hatonosu Valley (鳩ノ巣渓谷) — mossy bridges and emerald rivers, just two hours from Shinjuku.
🍁 Best mid–late November
🚃 JR Chuo Line → Ome Line → Hatonosu Station
📍Hinode Hiking (日の出山) — easy trails, an onsen nearby, and views over layers of red and gold.
🍁 Best mid-November
🚃 JR Ome Line → Mitake Station → Cable car to Hinodeyama trailhead
📍Hyougibara (評議原, near Mt. Takao) — a secret pampas grass field that glows at sunset.
🍁 Best early–mid November
🚃 Keio Line → Takaosanguchi Station → Local bus toward Kobotoke Pass
📍Tama Lake (多摩湖 / 村山貯水池) — cycling paths and golden reflections on the water.
🍁 Best late November
🚃 Seibu Line → Seibuyuenchi or Higashi-Yamatoshi Station
📍Koishikawa Botanical Garden — my favorite place in Tokyo, Japan’s oldest botanical garden where ginkgo leaves fall like golden rain.
🍁 Best late November–early December (mid-December for maples)
🚃10-min walk from Myogadani Station (Marunouchi Line)
Tips:
All of these are minor, lesser-known spots — peaceful compared to famous gardens like Rikugien or Shinjuku Gyoen. Still try visiting on weekdays if you can, as weekends often attract families out for hikes and picnics.
In the mountain areas, the leaves usually peak from mid to late November, while the closer you get to the city center, the later the colors appear.
