When I visit Korea, I only want to go eat at places that locals go. I search on Naver, YouTube and ask my family to find true “mat-jips” (true gems the locals recognize).
Korean foodie Pro-Tip: You have to go to restaurants with limited menu items that they specialize in.
I was planning my day at Hongdae and found great organic blogs and reviews about Ongshimi so I decided to try. The word Ongshimi is a traditional Korean dish, slippery, chewy-soft potato balls served in a warm, comforting broth. It’s a pure, nostalgic homestyle Korean comfort food.
I love that they offer unlimited barley rice and yul-moo (radish) kimchi and other condiments to make yourself a small bowl of bibimbap while you wait for your food. *Warning - the gochujang and yul-moo kimchi are so good so be careful not to eat too much!!! You’ll be too full to try your ongshimi!!
I highly recommend you get “Ongshimi Kalguksu” and not just ongshimi alone. I still can’t forget about the first bite into the ongshimi and the noodle with their kimchi and soup. I just literally drooled just thinking about it. And must order Meh-mil-jun-byung (flat dumplings made with buckwheat flour). Just trust me. Period.
It’s less than a 10 min walk from Hongdae Station so it’s an easy walk, so if you are planning your day in Hongdae, try this for your lunch. Expect a wait though… but Koreans eat fast and not sit around so it won’t be too long.
