Built in 1971, the New Shimbashi Building is like stepping into a time-warped salaryman paradise (famously called “oasis for salarymen.”) You’ll wander past rows of suit shops, hear the clink of glasses at izakayas, smell toast and coffee drifting from kissaten, and stumble upon a tiny shop filled with retro arcade games like Donkey Kong and Tetris. It’s nostalgic, and full of character.
Grab a blue Hawaii cream soda, fluffy pancakes, or yakisoba at Kissa Fuji [@coffee_fuji], or head down to Cattleya for old-school sandwiches and classic cakes - just be ready for a haze of cigarette smoke.
Just a short walk away is Kimuraya Parlour, famous for its pudding and retro desserts. We tried the coffee jelly and anmitsu - both were delicious!
Rumor has it demolition of the New Shimbashi Building is on the horizon but luckily the project still seems to be deep in planning…
Note: Kissa Fuji (located on B1F) has a separate smoking room, while at Cattleya (on 3F), smoking is allowed throughout the space.
The retro game arcade is located in the second floor.
Kimuraya Parlour is non-smoking and located a short walk away on the B1F of the Shimbashi Ekimae building 1.
